John Maynard Keynes was a British Economist born on the 5th of June in 1883. His ideas on the Economy would revolutionize the way nations did their Finances. He led his own successful career as a Independant Investor. He also had striking personal life outside the world of economics. He died on the 21st of April in 1946.
John Keynes made his living working for Alfred Marshall when he was appointed to the royal commission on Indian finances, this was his first job. He was later appointed to the British finance department during world war one. He gained quite a reputation when he told the allies that they were making the Germans pay to much and this would cause the German economy to collapse. Which it nearly did during the hyperinflation of 1923. Germany would go on to pay only a fraction of what was asked of them. For the next decade or so Keynes would go on to make a fortune as a private investor, he lost his fortune during the crash of 1929 but regained it shortly thereafter. In 1942 Keynes was admitted to the house of Lords of Baron Keynes. This would be the peak of his Economic career.
John Keynes also led a interesting Life outside of Economics. For the Majority of his life, all his romantic relationships were with other men. His lovers included Duncan Grant a famous artist, and Lytton Starchey a writer. But in 1921 he fell deeply in love with a woman, Lydia Lopokova a Russian ballerina, they were married in 1925 but they would never have children. Keynes was also very intelligent in general, few who argued against him left without changing their minds about that particular subject. This gave him great respect amongst his fellow peers. He attended church during his teens but would turn away from religion when he went to university and it would stay that way until his death.
John Keynes made remarkable changes to the economics of his time. He had the idea that Economies should be treated on a National level instead of just case by case for each Corporation. He also pushed governments to spend money they didnt have, creating credit in order to accomplish important tasks, such as fighting world war two. After the war ended Keynes helped push for a single International currency, but unfortunately he would pass away before he could even hope that any of these things have come to pass. There is some speculation that if Keynes had continued to live that perhaps we would be using one currency around the world today.
Throughout his life John Maynerd Keynes did many things, he changed the way we looked at our economies, he made a fortune, lost it and then regained it again. This took a great deal of intelligence. He did all this while keeping what could have been called a "scandalous"personnal life under wrap. He even became a member of the house of lords, quite an accomplishment in his time where depression and war were the main happenings. He did many things and we probably will never see a man like him again in history.

Oka Crisis
In 1717 The Governor of New France, granted some land that included an old Mohawk cemetery to a Catholic Seminary, this is where the Oka crisis began. The Mohawk believed that the catholics were only going to hold the lands for a short time before turning them back over to them. This never occurred and in 1868, one year after confederation the leader of the Mohawk condemned the seminary for holding the land illegally even though they had every legal right to hold that land. The Mohawk proceeded to attempt to seize the seminary by armed force, local authorities dealt with the problem. I believe this shows one of the key points about the crisis, the land didn't actually belong to the Mohawk. Other important parts about this are the lives that were lost and the fact that the people who killed them never faced charges. Also, why did the Mohawks believe that they had the right to commit acts of terrorism?
Firstly this Crisis should never had occurred, the Mohawk had no rights to the land anymore, nor did they ever really. They did have the right to protest yes, but building a barricade and having armed men guard it is absolutely unacceptable. They had even tried to make a claim on the land multiple times, every time their case was dismissed. This shows that they were really the only ones who thought that the land was theirs. The response by the Mohawk in my opinion is childish at best.
Corporal Marcel Lemay, a police officer was killed during the short burst of fighting that this Crisis created. We don't know who killed him, but considering the tactics used by the Canadian Armed Forces, one could accurately guess that he was killed by the "Protesters" in the confusion created by the Concussion (Flash Bang) grenades. Why wasn't this case ever investigated and the perpetrator brought to justice? What was so special about this situation that made it ok for an officer to be killed? there is no logical answer to these questions, someone is being allowed to avoid paying for his acts and this is nothing short of disgusting.
Why oh why were the Mohawks allowed to commit terrorist acts and get away with it? This is a flaw in the way our government deals with Aboriginal issues. What honestly makes them think that they can do these kinds of things? If it had been any other kind of group doing these protest they would have all been severely prosecuted and convicted of acts of terrorism. But somehow they are simply allowed to return to their reservations and continue collecting money from the government. How much longer are we going to take this? The Mohawks decided that the land was theirs, no one agrees with them and instead of doing what everyone else has to and just adapting to the change, they think that if they just get louder and whine more that people will give them their way, and we did. What are we, Spineless?
In conclusion, all this Crisis has shown is that we are a far weaker nation than we think, we need to start dealing with our own problems within our borders before going ashore, like Afganistan.

Red River emerangy workers
Although there are many dangers to working in emergancy situations, I believe the risk to be worth what can be saved, lives. There is no greater way to die than to die for another person in my opinion. Another benifit to working in these situations would be that you know that your job isnt boring. Its fast paced, exciting and requires an alert mind. Sounds like a grand way to live if you ask me.

UNPFII
The UNPFII ( United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues) is an organization based out of the UN to target issues specific to Indigenous peoples. Many members of this organization are indigenous people themselves and unfortunately they spend most of their time talking about the issues instead of just dealing with them within their own nations. I do not get why Canada has anything to do with this program. The creation of this organization is only going to make the difference between indigenous peoples and other people in the country larger by make them more distinctly different. indigenous peoples should learn to adapt to their changing world instead of holding on to the past.
The UNPFII meets for two weeks out of the year, what are they doing with the rest of the year? not much obviously because the "Issues" only seem to get worse and worse according to them. It would seem pretty stupid that any government is paying people to discuss issues for a tiny fraction of the year and then do nothing about it. This money could be far better used to just solve the issues that are obvious. Canada has some grasp over this idea because they voted against the declaration of the rights of indigenous peoples.
It seems to me that the entire point of the UNPFII is to try and make indigenous peoples look better somehow and convince governments that they deserve special treatment somehow. This is ridiculous as all peoples should be treated equally. The indigenous people of many countries are simply not willing to change with the rest of the world believing that they don't need to change, and they don't really. If the whine enough about their problems governments will just give them what they want so they'll shut up. This is how it works in Canada at least.
Change is the word of our times, everything around us is changing at such a alarming rate that it's hard to keep up with it all. Many indigenous peoples are not used to this state of constant change and simply cannot keep up, this isn't their faults entirely. By putting them on reserves we've basically put them aside to fend for themselves, and that was just peachy 100 years ago, but now it is simply impossible for indigenous people to live the same lives they have been living in todays world, so they are expected to make 100 years of change up instantly. It cant be done, plain and simple. This is partly governments fault for in a way, holding indigenous cultures back by not allowing them to merge with other societies and cultures. It is also the peoples fault for not pushing for this until now, they've waited until it was to late to try and make nessacary changes and they expect it (the catch-up process) to be easy and pain-free because they want others to do it for them.
In summary the UNPFII isnt really doing anything for the world, I could not find one thing on their website that actually changed something in a nation or raised awareness, I hadnt even heard of the UNPFII until today.

The Silk Road
The Silk Road had a massive impact on the development of Europe, ranging from the Romans to the Renaissance. Culture and vital technology were shared by these routes that without, we may still have been living in a feudal society. Many goods were also traded obviously that enhanced the lives of both the Europeans and those they traded with. But with the sharing of these cultures and religions came conflict with led to wars such as the crusades.
While traders traversed the silk road (although very few went from one end to another) they passed by and stayed amongst cultures that were far different from their own, many of these traders that experienced these different traditions and ideas brought them back home with them. For example the Chinese were the first to effectively use gunpowder, and without the silk road this incredible advancement in warfare would have not been available to Europeans for hundreds of years. The printing press which allowed thinkers to get their radical new ideas about freedom and rebellion against the Catholic church was also first developed in Asia. The people of Europe took the idea and applied it to their own lives. Without either of these things, Europe could have very well been the same old society we read about in history books still.
Silk was not the only thing that was traded on the Silk Road. Many other valuable products made their way across the Route for the gain of all who were involved, although most of the benefit does go to Europe. Spices that allowed food that had been salted in order to preserve it to still have some taste to it, a big plus to the lives of those who could afford to have spices shipped half way around the world. Medicines were also traded which have very obvious value in that they extended the lives of those who could get a hold of them. Pottery was also traded by those in the middle east for products that both the Europeans and the Asians had, this allowed middle eastern nations to develop along side their neighbours and remain in control of their lands.
While some traders brought back the ideas and traditions that they had learned on the Silk Road, some opposed them and tried to force their ideas upon the natives of the land. This resulted in Major conflicts. Through the Silk Road, leaders of the Christians in Europe learned that the "Holy Land" or Israel was under control of the Arabs, They couldn't just let that sit could they? So they sent their great armies to go and reclaim it and thus the crusades began. If the silk road had not existed, how would they have learned of these things? Also, how did these armies get to the Holy Land? Most likely through the trade routes of the Silk Road. Even today, these same conflicts still exist, and it all started on the Silk Road.
As you can see The Silk Road has played not just any ordinary role in the development of Europe from its medieval Society to the modern place it is today, but a lead role that we couldn't have lived without. Now we have many other ways of transporting goods such as air travel and new sea routes, but we also have the ways needed to transport ideas across the land through the media. The effects of the Silk Road are still in effect today, the middle east is in chaos because some are still trying to force those same ideals upon the people, and the people will still not accept them.

Sudan
How does colonialism apply to Sudan today? to understand this question we must first figure out what happened in Sudan and how Great Britain and Egypt have made their impacts on this country. Back in the 1880's the area known today as Sudan was colonized and ruled by Britain. Almost twenty years later Egypt entered the scene when Britain and Egypt decided to rule Sudan jointly and things stayed that way until the "Closed door" policy to separate the Arab peoples in the Northern parts of Sudan and those of African descent and this worked fairly well until 1956 when Sudan earned their Independence from both ruling nations. Sounds great right? not really, the people were still extremely divided from all those years of living the "Closed door" policies so two major groups emerged, the Africans in the south and the Arabs in the north. Now the two groups could have just split off into two separate nations at this point and everything would've been just peachy. Things don't work that way though instead the stronger of the two halves (Arab groups in the North) took control of the entire country and began to force their beliefs and traditions upon the African groups of the south. All other ideals, traditions and beliefs were suppressed and people were punished if they openly supported them. The Africans weren't going down without a fight though, and this has resulted in civil war throughout Sudan.
The best Solution to this problem in my opinion would be a strong, but peaceful intervention by stronger nations like the US, Britain, or Canada. They could bring some sort equality to all the people. Easy to say though, those countries have their own problems that need dealing with let alone taking the problems of other nations upon their shoulders, and even if they were to step in reversing the damage would take many many years.
Overall Colonialism has had a very interesting and negative effect upon Sudan. But I believe the real mistake here was splitting the two cultures up and having the "Closed door" policy in the first place, the people should have been forced to learn to live with each other and accept their differences long before gaining Independence.

Sudan
Colonialism has played a major role in the history and development of Sudan. To understand the situation you need to know what the back story is. In the 1880's, Good 'ole Great Britain began to colonize and rule over the area known as Sudan. They had issues with the neighbouring nation Egypt. in 1899 they agreed to rule the Country jointly divided into a northern half ruled by Egypt and a southern half ruled by Britain. Now the northern half contained people of Arabic descent and the south had the African natives. This kept the two peoples lived on without even really knowing that the other half even existed.
There wasn't really a problem with that until the 50's when both halves of Sudan achieved independence from their mother countries and suddenly had to deal with each other for the first time in 100 years. Now the basic principle is that whoever was the stronger of the two sides would take over and make the government and that side was the Norther Arabic side. This wouldn't have been a problem except that they quickly began to force their religion and traditions on the Sudanese people, not wanting to give up their own beliefs they fought back and civil war ensued. But since the North was much stronger the southern half soon began to lose and suffered from depopulation and forced movement.
A simple solution to this problem would be that the two halves could split off into their own separate nations entirely, but this probably would not end up working out as the stronger of the two nations would feel that the other half should belong to them and war would continue. A more likely solution would be the intervention of the situation by a much stronger nation, (The US most likely) but even then reversing the damage done will take a long time, but its still better late then never I say.

Potlatch
A Potlatch is a social event where a certain family would host a party of sorts. During the party the family would give many marvelous gifts to their guests. While the reason behind this was supposed to be to redistribute the wealth throughout the community but many just used it as a clever way to make they look good to others. Native American tribes of the Pacific Northwest Coast mainly practiced this event of its own.
There are some similarities between Potlatch’s in the past and lots of charity work today. Both are supposed to be Redistributing the wealth and they are, but most people who do charity work are simply put trying to boost the way they look to others. It’s sad but true that many wealthy celebrity figures take this generous act and twist it into a way to just end up making themselves more money. It would seem that the Wealthy of the northwest Pacific tribes have the same pride in them that celebrities today do. We can look on the bright side though, at least they are doing a little good for others in this selfish act, and the same thing probably happened to the less than wealthy people of the past with Potlatchs.

Residential Schools
Residential schools have influenced those that went to them quite heavily. But what are they and why are they considered so controversial? How did this controversy start? What really happened in those schools? How are we dealing with this issue today? I will try and answer these questions.
First let's talk about what these schools were and what happened within their walls. Residential schools were used by the British to assimilate the First Nations people into European society and ways. In the schools, nothing was like home for the students as they were not allowed to speak their own language or honour any traditions of their fathers. Students caught doing such things were usually disciplined severely. Students did not return home either, for if they did they might begin to live the ways of the Natives, So they stayed and were abused by most of the teachers physically, mentally, and sexually. This is where the controversy has arisen from, the unfair treatment that first nations people received at the hands of their European teachers.
An effect of these residential today is the billions of dollars that have been spent in compensation for the abuse that they suffered. I'm not going to say that they shouldn't be getting compensated because they should, some though did not actually receive any abuse and went through residential school perfectly fine. Yet they still get the same money that those who were abused simply because they went to school. I believe that we need to be more through in checking this, We cannot afford to waste any money during these times on unnecessary things.

Why were these schools started in the first place? why did the British think it so necessary to assimilate the Natives into their society? The British believed that theirs was the only proper way for things to be done, so they really thought they were doing the natives a favour because they must have not known any better. This kind of behaviour was actually pretty common in that day. Luckily people have been taught better since then and widespread acts like this are relatively unheard of.
Overall, Residential schools are a small part of Canada's history that we aren't proud of. It was a cultural genocide that dramatically effected the lives of many people involved with them. We are now paying for our mistakes of the past and hope that they will heal and then forgive us. A valueble lesson was learned though and such things will never be heard of again.

Marginalization
In Cape York Australia a national holiday is celebrated called "National Sorry Day"
This Unofficial holiday was established to apologize for the way the government had treated the indigenous people of Australia. They are mainly apologizing for the "stolen generations" of children that were taken by both the government and religious organizations for their own purposes. This also includes the seizing of aboriginal lands and many damaging policies made by Parliament against them.
As a result of this holiday treatment of the Indigenous people has much improved with increased rights that allow them to make the necessary negotiations for their ancestral lands. Some compensation money has also been given, although many argue that not nearly enough has been given to rightly make up for what was done. The Australian government has never stated an apology though, and what needs to be done will most likely not happen until an apology is made.
Back in Canada, the Lubicon people face a touch challenge ahead of them. Oil companies are clearing the forests to drill for oil, the Lubicon need these forest and the wildlife inside to make their living. They have made many pleas to the federal government but have failed to grab their attention through peaceful protest, instead they have turned to more "active" ways to make the government pay attention. Mostly by taking the logs of the trees the oil companies have chopped down and blocking the road with them preventing the oil companies from getting their workers to the oil wells. This has made the feds listen a little as negotiations are now hit and miss.
The major problem the Lubicon face is the fact that their livelihood is being destroyed right before their eyes and as hard as they try to get help, no one will listen to them. they have tried negotiating through peace, violence, and every manner they can think of. However because the federal government has never actually ceded the land to the Lubicon officially they may not get the help they need until it is to late.
A simple solution to this problem would be to compensate the Lubicon people for the land and work that is and has been taken from them, this should be done by the oil companies as they are the ones that have destroyed these parts of the Lubicon life. This would also get the lubicon off the governments back so they could focus on other very important tasks.

A simple solution to this problem would be to compensate the Lubicon people for the land and work that is and has been taken from them, this should be done by the oil companies as they are the ones that have destroyed these parts of the Lubicon life. This would also get the lubicon off the governments back so they could focus on other very important tasks.

Credit Crisis
The Credit Crisis began with the “Dot com” bust that supposedly forced the Federal Reserve into lowering the interest rates causing wall st. to borrow endless amounts of money and then proceed to loan it out to irresponsible citizens that were completely in capable of paying back their mortgages. Bankers themselves though are unwilling to admit their mistake and fork over the necessary funds to pay off the debts they’ve collected.
The Federal Reserve made the first and biggest mistake when they lowered the interest on loans and investments to just 1%. This drove the investors away from the reserve and in search of new safe investments. It also brought the bankers in to loan out billion upon billions of dollars, where did all this money come from exactly? The Federal Reserve printed it out of course, inflating the economy by doing so, why? To make a few extra bucks, and it only cost them the economy as a whole.
The next mistake was made by brokers that sold sub-prime mortgages to people who wanted to live the American dream, but was in no financial position to do so. But they sold the mortgages anyway, thinking they could sell them off before they defaulted thus passing the problem off to someone else and making themselves a pretty dollar. But their little scheme came back and bit them where it hurt when hundreds of thousands of homeowners defaulted, most because they couldn’t afford it but some also who were sick of making payments on something that was worth maybe only a third of what it was now worth. With this investors lost their trust in the bankers, refusing to buy any Collective Debt Obligations because even the safe ones were too risky to put their money on it.
Finally bankers stubborn attitudes and unwillingness to pay for the less then brilliant decisions they made is not solving any problems, it only delays any possible solutions. The N word (Nationalization) is only spoken of in whispers when it should be openly embraced, sure its not exactly what this country was built upon but none of these ideals will matter when we are unable to feed our people or protect them from any eager nations waiting for the US economy to fully crash, when they will be at their weakest point, and then they will strike. What will your free economic ideals mean when your countries defenses crumble upon themselves, what will that say about a free economy? They will say that it failed and Communism was the better form of government, that at least tyranny was stable enough to hold itself together.
In closing I would like to say that the absolute largest factor of this crisis is greed. Almost all of these mistakes were made in an effort to exploit someone else and take their money. If people would just be satisfied with what they had then the federal reserve wouldn’t have loaned money to banks that couldn’t afford to pay them back, bankers wouldn’t have sold mortgages to people who couldn’t afford a cardboard box let alone a house. But all they thought of is, “ if I can just get this to the next guy ill be safe, it’s his problem now.” You’re wrong, it’s our entire problem and we all need to step up and fix it, it wont be easy but it is still possible.

Moana Maniapoto
#1. Moana Maniopoto describes the "moko" is less of a picture simply embedded in someones skin, it is a symbol of the Maori culture, it shows lineage, and pride for ones tribe. It connects the tribes people to their history, from war to religion, love and death. She must think that tattoo's are silly and a disrespectful term to a sacred art of her people. It stays with you until the end. Moana Maniopoto is speaking to the youth of the Maori, telling them to remember their heritage and respect it for what it is, not some silly pictures like Western tattoos, they are two distinct things and should be treated likewise.
#2. Maniapoto uses factual information to get her point across. It is a fact that genealogy and occupation could be deciphered from the paintings. They tell us almost everything about the Maori culture including religion, government, and their wars. This is the most effective way that we can know without actually being amongst the Maori themselves. Her method is effective because of how catchy her song is, making you want to listen to it many times thus the message is sent out lots.
#3. Maniapoto clearly defines and expresses her views in her music. One such view is opposition to free trade. She also wishes for Independance of Timor ands supports Maori troops out in the field fighting to defend the traditions of her people. Overall she has lots of pride about her people and would defend them valiantly with all her heart and soul.

Legacies
My definition of a legacy is something great that has been left by those before us to help us remember great deeds of the past.
The Richmond Oval will be a Legacy of the twenty-ten winter Olympic games because of what will happen to it after the games, not what actually goes down during the Olympics. It will also be remembered for the marvel of engineering the "Wood wave" is. After the closing ceremonies of the 2010 games the Richmond oval will immediately begin it's conversion to a training facility for many sports such as Ice hockey, Running with a 200m track, and lots of ball sports in the full size gymnasium. The actual speed skating track will remain being covered in a removable floor though and could be used for completions and training for our athletes. The roof includes over 1 million feet of BC pine beetle linked together to make a astonishing ripple effect. These things will make us remember the Richmond oval and the 2010 games forever.

Dangerous Activities in Magrath
Magrath is a fairly calm town but a few residents have taken up Weed/marijuana/Pot as their new hobby. Unfortunately despite the benefits to the plant it has been made an illegal substance in Canada due to the hallucinations its addicting effects on users requiring them to purchase more and more of the herb. But still many people are growing Pot in their basements for both personal use and for profit. It's not easy to grow illegal substances in most areas but the surprisingly small police force in Magrath allows most growers to operate without much worry. There are many benefits to smoking the plant, it alleviates headaches, clears the mind and is said to have cancer fighting properties to it. It also induces visions and hallucinations that users claim to reveal great truths to them. Overall I believe the drug to not be worth the effort, most of it's medical properties can be substituted with other drugs that are easier to get, legal and cheaper. Maybe it might be fun to try it just once, but I'd rather not take the risk of arrest or addiction.

First Assignment; What it means to be Canadian
Being Canadian means many things, it means that you are responsible to represent your country in any international affairs at home or abroad even if it includes warfare. Being Canadian means that you must honour and live the laws of the land and Finally being a Canadian Citizen means that you are free to do whatever your heart desires that is within the law.
Representing your country is a difficult job, Canada is a very well respected nation amongst the international community and we are expected to act like a respectable people. Don't mock another countries traditions or ways of doing things, be courteous and even try to adapt to another countries rules of etiquette. We must also be ready to defend our nation in times of war and our freedom is being challenged. That means we should be ready for a war at anytime, stay in decent physical shape, and be alert of what is going on in the world so you can know who your up against, you can't fight a nameless foe.The Canadian Government has made laws for the good and safety of its people and we should respect that. Arguing with the police officer about your seat belt ticket is by no means honouring the law, its straight-up challenging it which is ridiculous because if you have any common sense you would know that seat belts save lives. You should not try to find loopholes in the law so that you can do illegal activity and not be punished for your wrongful actions. While it's legal it's completely unethical. Laws are also there to protect the livelihood of the people, if there was only one company that controlled all the grains in the country they could legally abuse their power and basically steal from the people by charging ridiculous prices. Lucky for us our government saw this coming ahead of time and then made it much more difficult for something like this to happen. It's our duty to respect what has been done for us.
Even with our many laws we have many freedoms that most of the world cannot enjoy. if you want to you can create your own business to manufacture and sell whatever you can afford to do and even if you can't afford it right now we have wonderful banks that will temporarily give you the money you need to get started. They'll even give you the choice of how or when you pay it back, of course if you choose to not pay them back you will be held accountable for your actions and will find yourself sitting in a cell for quite some time. One of the greatest freedoms we posses though is the right to move about the country and live anywhere in this vast and diverse country.
Overall as Canadians we have lots of responsibilities and lots of rights that go along with them. We can choose to uphold Canada as the greatest country to be in by behaving ourselves or we can totally trash it. We are given laws to uphold for the safety of the people and are punished for breaking them, we know what were getting into when we commit crimes so we shouldn't whine and throw a little legal tantrum when we get busted. But we have the freedom to do so if we honestly believe we haven't done anything wrong and having these freedoms is what separates us from the world and makes us Canadian.
